Sansevieria or Mother-in-law’s Tongue

Do you ever see what is Mother-in-law's tongue plant looks like? Surely many do not know what this Mother-in-Law's plant looks like, right? . Its scientific name is "sansevieria". In malay. we usually called it as "Snake Plant" or "Pokok Lidah Jin" In Western countries apart from being known as Mother-In-Law's Tongue and Snake Plant, this plant is also called Devil's Tongue and "bow string hemp".


This Mother-in-law's tongue plant originates from the African continent and there are more than 70 species. Among them are Sansevieria Cylindrica, Sansevieria Ehrenbergii, Sansevieria Eilensis, Sansevieria Kirkii, Sansevieria Pinguicula, Sansevieria Trifasciata and Sansevieria Stuckyi. The most popular species as an ornamental plant are Sansevieria Trifasciata.


This plant is suitable as a fence plant or planted separately and can also be planted in a beautiful pot and placed indoors but make sure it is placed where the plants can get a sunglight source. It is better to place it close to the door or window to get sunlight.


Snake Plant or Genie tongue trees are more fertile if planted in shady areas but get a lot of bright light. The soil should not retain water like soil mixed with sand or pebbles. There is no need to water it often because the roots will rot if there is too much water. This tree can live for many years.


Propagation is also very easy that is through the cuttings of the leaves. Just prick the bottom of the leaf cut into the ground. Or it can also be done by separating the leaves from the original clumps of trees into small groups and replanting them in other places or pots. As an ornamental plant, to look more beautiful, the leaves should be sprayed with water and wiped clean and shiny. In terms of traditional medicine, the leaves of the genie's tongue can be used as a wound dressing.
